Dummy Output Device in Ubuntu
(We recommend you bookmark this blog. Trying to find helpful information in forums usually just ends in making you frustrated and angry. This blog does not speculate or guess. If we post it, we've tried it and it works. As with all our posts, if you don't care about the background info, you can head straight to the yellow highlighted sections for the problem and the fix.)
The Background
Recently I was going about my business as usual on my computer, when I noticed that my system sounds had been silent for quite a while. Because I rely on them heavily in the type of work I do, that is a no-no. When I clicked on Settings, Sounds, I saw that the Output Device box was pre-populated with "Dummy Output Device," and no other choice. My normal choice is my desktop speakers, which were all plugged in still and had power to them.
As always, I am embarrassed and surprised when I allow myself to search the Ubuntu forums (especially StackExhange) because I found nothing there but speculation, "maybes" and "ifs" and "have your tried?" yadda yadda, mostly from the programmer eggheads (but I still love and admire you) who fancy that they are able to communicate in any meaningful way with desktop end-users.
A bunch of the StackExhange comments were focused on using the Terminal for the fix; the only problem being that when someone followed their advice, nothing they did in the Terminal seemed to work, or it worked only sporadically. The mumbo-jumbo, mystery and obfuscation once again overwhelmed me quickly. I was forced to stop and think about things myself. What changed since I last used my computer and/or the last time I heard my system sounds?
Answer: Two days ago I was stricken with "unused-feature"-remorse and guilt; thus, instead of simply Locking the computer at the end of my day, for two days in a row I Suspended the computer instead. Something in my pegged-out "Perceiver" personality-type told me that there had to be a connection between Suspending my computer, and the non-detection of my sound devices (speakers). Now for the Big Reveal and my solution.
The Solution
Reboot.
Hey, does "reboot" sound way too simplistic? Maybe not. I want back to some of the StackExchange discussions that had ten's of questions and comments on the subject, and not once did the person with the problem mention rebooting, either before or after seeking the advice of others (which also did not suggest rebooting). I'm just sayin'...
