archive.org 500 internal server error message, nginx
(We recommend you bookmark this blog. Trying to find helpful information in forums usually just ends in making you frustrated and angry. This blog does not speculate or guess. OS: Ubuntu 23.10
Browser: Chrome
Issue: I download a bunch of books from archive.org. Suddenly, on my Linux computer, each time I clicked on a download button (pdf, epub, etc) to download a book, a page popped up with "500 internal server error" message.
In the Forums: Useless information with a bunch of technical gibberish, including on the message board at archive.org.
Test: I went to my wife's Window's machine, logged in with my name, launched Chrome, went to archive.org, and had no problem downloading the same book that I could not download on my Linux machine. At first, I thought it might have been because I recently installed, then uninstalled, Virtualbox on my Linux machine. But that made no sense. Then I made sure I was signed out of archive.org on my wife's Windows machine (which made only marginally more sense). Finally, after pondering it a bit more and asking myself what were the basic things I was overlooking, it came down to two things: First, maybe the version of Chrome on my Linux machine was somehow faulty, compared to the version of Chrome on the Windows machine; but I rejected that. Second, and Voila!…
Solution: …I cleared my browsing history for the past four weeks, then relaunched Chrome. That's all it took to fix the problem.
P.S. In all my searches for an answer, not once did I see in any forum the suggestion that this might be either the problem or the solution. Did I mention yet in this post that "Forums are terrible places to find solutions to your computer problems"? 🗭
